Sixty-Four Squares
Sixteen squares preoccupied
by troops opposed on either side
thirty-two vacated for
impending battles
all-out war:
Pawns move forth.
Knights leap Ls.
Bishops slice diagonals.
Rooks range Ts.
Kings step once whereby they please
unless when castling
supercedes.
Queens, they'll surely dominate
all directions
one to eight!

47 words (50 being the prompt limit). Squares brevity challenge - link:

Poem inspired by chess.
In addition to the brevity (50 words) challenge, I also tried to challenge myself to create somewhat of a "chess mnemonic" poem here within those limites, something potentially useful for remembering the basic chess board layout and its pieces.
