Tableau

As other busted fruit reveals
their pulpy juice and seedy peels
as swift to spoil under sun,
beguiling strikes:  that midmost one,
of solid darkness, does excite
an appetence beyond a bite:
how is it, rotten, left for show,
about as ripe, but bland tableau?
Who garnered it, refused to eat?
Beneath that sheen, all mush? Deceit?

No flies desert it, either way:
they savor substance past decay,
forbidding flavors, odors, sight
to ruin their feast of waste tonight.
